Follow these guidelines to maximize vulvovaginal health!

  • Underwear - sleep without and use cotton underwear only. 

  • Menstruation products - (tampons, pads, pantiliners): choose unscented, unbleached, cotton products

  • Toilet paper - unscented, unbleached, no additives

  • Soaps, lotions/detergents - unscented, without chemicals of concern

  • Cleansing - Vulva: use lukewarm or cool water, use fingertips, pat dry. Body: fragrance free, pH neutral soap

  • Vulvovaginal Moisturizers - without chemicals of concern (see IPH handout)

  • Lubricants - without chemicals of concern (see IPH handout)

If having vulvovaginal irritation

  • Try loose fitting, pants, skirts

  • Try going without underwear

  • Pat dry rather than wiping from front to back

  • Avoid hot tubs, highly chlorinated pools

  • Try walking/jogging, rather than biking (we don’t want to put extra pressure on the vulva)
